You select ergonomic chairs for your use so that you can avoid stress to your lower back and thereby back pain. Therefore, you have to be very careful in selecting your chair.
Conventional office chairs are made of wood, steel, and fiber and are mostly cushioned with leather, resin or such other materials intending to provide comfort for the user. However, most of them are not built with stress factor into consideration and the user often ends up with severe back pain or other compound spine problems.
Good ergonomic office chairs will have the following characteristics.
- The height should be adjustable. Normally the height of 16 to 21 inches from the ground will work well for most of the users. They will be able to keep their feet flat on floor, and thighs and arms in perfect posture for the height of the table.
- Usually the width of 17 to 20 inches will work fine for the user and the depth of the seat should be around 2 to 4 inches from the back of the knee. It would be better if the seat cold be adjusted forward and backward.
- Since lumbar spine can be unnecessarily stressed due to longer sitting, the leather office chairs may cause problems. Ergonomic chair should take care of this aspect and supports the inward curve of lumbar spine.
- Adjustable back rest, padding on the seat and backrest, adjustable armrests and easy swiveling are the other characteristics required in a good ergonomic office chair.
